Joe Gold pioneered the fitness centre concept and opened the doors of the first Gold's Gym in August 1965, at the now iconic Venice Beach, California location. Gold's Gym Venice beach featured home made gym equipment and was frequented by the bodybuilding greats, including Dave Draper and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Venice Beach gym location played a key part in the famous bodybuilding docudrama Pumping Iron, which brought attention not only to the gym itself but also to bodybuilding and physique in general. To this day, Gold's Gym is considered a landmark in bodybuilding culture and has achieved cult status. Gold's Gym apparel has become a symbol of the bodybuilding industry.
